Our approach to sustainability
Our approach to protecting the planet revolves around the development of innovative technologies and products that help everyone – from customers to partners – work together to make the most of our resources and minimize our impact on the environment. Meanwhile, we work continuously to reduce our footprint at every stage of product development and business operations – from materials and design choices to green manufacturing and low-carbon office park practices.
Practicing green product development
As an industry leader with a global reach, we know that even small changes in our product development processes can make a big difference. That’s why we continue exploring best practices to reduce waste and minimize our footprint, from the moment a product is in prototype to its end of life.
We consider our environmental impact carefully, starting from the product design stage. We've explored various ways to optimize our security camera designs, constantly seeking a balance between product performance and energy efficiency. We also use 3D simulations instead of physical prototypes in the early development of cameras to minimize waste.
We have introduced clean technology in our manufacturing as well. For example, we have applied a no-paint process in the manufacture of our turnstiles, keeping the impact on the environment as low as possible with less discharge of waste water and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Packaging plays a key role in keeping our products intact during transport and when providing the first look at a product by customers. We continually refine our packaging practices by maximizing the use of eco-friendly, biodegradable materials and gradually phasing out polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Exploring green business park operations
In our office parks, intelligent devices equipped with optical character recognition (OCR) technology automatically collect electricity-meter readings from various locations. The data is then aggregated into an energy management system to inform and refine our energy-saving measures. This energy management system has increased electricity consumption efficiency at our office parks by 10% since its implementation.
Similar measures are being taken at our manufacturing complexes. The energy management system combines information on work shifts and meeting schedules with the IoT-detected usage status of the facility to determine how much lighting gets wasted. The system automatically turns off the lights or notifies relevant personnel with details to improve usage. In the plant's maintenance area alone, lighting waste has been reduced by 3.5 hours per day.
Incorporating green thinking into technology & product innovation
Increasing energy efficiency and using green energy are critical to reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change. That's why we prioritize and continue to implement technologies that optimize the energy consumption of our products.
By eliminating the need for an external power supply, our Solar-powered Security Camera uses approximately 80 kWh less electricity per year. As a result, a single camera can prevent about 56.7 kg of CO2 emissions per year.
We continue to optimize power consumption, too. For example, select Ultra Series Network Cameras feature a low-power mode. The camera continues to operate, but only captures images when events occur, saving enough energy to charge around 2,100 smartphones per year.
The eDVR Series is another leap forward. Thanks to eSSD technology, an eDVR reduces energy consumption by almost 45% over conventional DVRs. The energy saved in one year is equivalent to what’s absorbed by a mature tree in the same period.
By simplifying the encapsulation with better dissipation, our LED displays with flip-chip COB can reduce power consumption by around 45% and screen body temperature by 5-10° C.
DarkFighterS technology produces color images in ambient light as low as 0.0003 lux, significantly delaying the need for additional lighting. In dark-ness, users can set motion-triggered supplemental lighting instead of “always-on” lighting to reduce energy use while maintaining security.
Providing green solutions to protect our environment
Ensuring a livable environment for everyone is a major challenge as urbanization accelerates. That’s why Hikvision seeks to provide greener solutions dedicated to our cities and their surroundings, helping them achieve sustainability goals through concrete actions. To date, Hikvision has launched over 30 dedicated AIoT products and more than 200 intelligent analysis algorithms for air and water quality monitoring, smart weather observation, vehicle emission reduction, urban waste management, and other environmental protection applications.
