Product Manager Q&A: Hikvision’s LED displays gear up to serve customers worldwide

Since establishing its commercial display product line in 2008, Hikvision has dedicated significant resources to creating a dynamic and evolving portfolio of display products for a range of scenarios and settings. This extensive range now covers LED displays, interactive flat panels, LCD video walls, digital signage, and control & decode devices, catering to diverse needs across global markets. Hikvision's LED product manager, Richard Wu, explains how we are investing in R&D to create more vivid, durable, and sustainable LED displays for customers in global markets.

Q: Could you give us an overview of Hikvision’s LED product family?

A: Certainly, Hikvision's LED product family is quite comprehensive, and designed to meet a multitude of applications and customer demands. Our offerings include indoor, outdoor, creative, and other display lines, which are suitable for retail, DOOH (Digital Out Of Home), corporate displays, stage scenarios, and more. The range also includes versatile options like indoor COB (Chip on Board) LED displays, IMD (Integrated Matrix Devices), and SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) products, outdoor energy-saving aluminum bottom shell series, cost-effective die-casting aluminum products, rental displays, LED modules, all-in-one devices, and creative solutions such as transparent screens, flexible displays, floor tile screens, poster screens and custom LED panel solutions.

Q: When did Hikvision introduce its first LED display products and why?

A: In 2015, we ventured into the world of LED displays with the first P1.2 fine pitch LED display. However, our journey into this domain started back in 2008, when the industry landscape was rapidly changing. LCD splicing screens were replacing traditional monitors on a large scale and, in 2013, we started investing heavily in R&D for LED product lines. This is essentially because we realized that LED displays would eventually replace LCD splicing screens due to enhanced visuals, seamless splicing, and greater cost efficiency. After more than 10 years of dedicated work, we now offer multiple display lines. Additionally, Hikvision has consistently been the top supplier of China’s video wall market since 2014.

Q: How has Hikvision invested in R&D for the LED product line?

A: Everybody in our R&D team is dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies to deliver high-quality LED displays that prioritize performance, sustainability, and user experience. For example, to reduce environmental impact, we offer COB (Chip-on-Board) LED, Mini LED, and energy-efficient products. These innovations stand for new levels of sustainability in the market. We have also leveraged our strengths in software and hardware R&D to develop our own LED control system, which incorporates unique applications such as an Online Maintenance Platform for easy management.

Q: How about manufacturing, are Hikvision’s LED displays manufactured separately from other product lines?

A: Yes. We currently have an 8,000 square-meter production site where our LED displays are assembled, tested and packaged. Our self-research and self-production rate of baseline products has exceeded 90%, and the monthly production capacity of LED lamps exceeds five billion. In the second half of this year, we will introduce a new, fully automated one-piece-flow production line for our LED module products. This expansion is expected to greatly improve our production capacity and efficiency, as well as shortening the product delivery cycle.

Q: What sustainability technologies are embedded in Hikvision’s LED displays?

A: At Hikvision, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a core goal of our LED innovations. We prioritize green practices and incorporate multiple energy-saving technologies to product eco-friendly LED displays.

For example, the flip-chip COB technology we use eliminates wire-bonding, resulting in a larger luminous area, significant energy savings (up to 45%), and reduced operating temperatures. Meanwhile, our common cathode technology improves heat dissipation and achieves up to 50% energy reduction in outdoor displays, which can operate without air conditioning below 60℃, providing a more economical and eco-friendly solution.

Furthermore, PixMaster, our intelligent energy-saving engine, employs pixel-level image enhancement to provide superior image clarity, while reducing energy consumption by approximately 20%, resulting in a longer product lifespan and greater operating stability.

Q: How are Hikvision’s LEDs performing in global markets?

A: Hikvision operates in over 150 countries and regions through 72 international branches, delivering products and services worldwide. For our LED business, we collaborate with thousands of partners and we have successfully deployed LED solutions for a wide range of applications, such as command centers, shopping malls, exhibition halls, conference rooms, and outdoor scenarios like billboards and advertising screens. For example, we have partnered with Oman Tower Company to equip a telecom tower in Salalah with giant LED screens, transforming it into a local attraction. Additionally, we worked with Intersport, a sports product retail chain, to install LED displays in one of their stores in Athens Greece, providing outstanding visuals for a great customer experience.

Q: How is the LED market evolving? How will Hikvision respond to these future trends?

A: Market research firms expect the total size of the overseas LED market to exceed USD$3 billion (RMB 20 billion) in 2023. Small-pitch products will gain traction due to falling production costs and higher market recognition. Outdoor LEDs and rental LEDs also represent a growth market, and we are seeing huge demand for these kinds of products. However, as the overall global economy is still recovering, market players will compete to offer lower prices for rental products as well as outdoor products with lower power consumption.

We will continue to invest in R&D to stay ahead of changing consumer needs, integrating cutting-edge video technology and applications for a more immersive user experience, while supporting sustainability and green practices. But that’s not all – we will explore new channels and partnerships to bring our exceptional products closer to customers far and wide.
